Redfern Presenting Series - Ephrat Asherie Dance: Odeon

Led by the Boston Globe’s “bona fide b-girl” and 2016 New York Dance and Performance (“Bessie”) Award recipient, Ephrat Asherie Dance makes its Redfern debut with Odeon, a high-octane dance work for seven dancers and four musicians. Set to the music of early-20th-century Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth and performed live by jazz musician and brother Ehud Asherie, this original dance layers and remixes breaking, hip-hop, house, and vogue with Nazareth’s exhilarating fusion of Afro-Brazilian rhythms and European classical traditions. The result is a match of movement and score that is playful, poetic, and exuberant. Tickets here.

Ephrat Asherie Dance at The Joyce Theater

Choreographer and “bona fide b-girl” (The Boston Globe) Ephrat Asherie brings a high-energy, hybrid work that layers breaking, hip-hop, house, and vogue. In their second collaboration together, the choreographer teams up with her brother, jazz pianist Ehud Asherie, whom The New Yorker has called “a master of swing and stride.” In Odeon, the duo reimagines signature compositions of 20th-century Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth, noted for melding classical music with Afro-Brazilian rhythms. Featuring seven dancers and four musicians, Odeon creates a world that offers “a wholly original style and sound” (The Chicago Tribune). Tickets here.

Ephrat Asherie Dance + Workshop

Odeon, an original dance work for seven dancers is the second collaboration between sister and brother team Ephrat and Ehud Asherie (choreographer and musical director, respectively). Set to the music of Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth, known for mixing early 20th century romantic music with samba and other popular Afro-Brazilian rhythms, this work takes a hybrid approach to movement.

Odeon delves into what happens when you bring together the extended family of street and club dances — including breaking, hip hop, house and vogue — remix them, pick them apart and challenge them to inhabit unfamiliar spatial and choreographic contexts.

Workshop October 4, 6pm included in Performance ticket purchase. Tickets here.
