EPHRAT ASHERIE DANCE

UNDERSCORED acts as a living archive of five generations of NYC club dancers. The evening-length performance of UNDERSCORED is a multi-generational collaboration with performers ranging in age from 28-80. Celebrating and investigating their connections to the club scene from the 1970s at seminal parties like the Loft and the Paradise Garage until today, UNDERSCORED features EAD ensemble members and three NYC club legends, Archie Burnett, Brahms "Bravo" LaFortune and Michele Saunders. Audiences join the company in an exhilarating journey through deeply personal histories, rarely seen archival footage, a vast musical landscape including funk, disco and house and of course decades of dancing through the culturally reflective styles of breaking, hip-hop, house, vogue, waacking and hustle. The pandemic kept ALL of us from gathering. Whether on or off the dance floor, UNDERSCORED is a reminder of how essential it is to connect to one another.

Ephrat Asherie brings her new collaborative show "Shadow Cities" to the University of Rochester, a work created with Grammy award-winning jazz musician and composer Arturo O’Farrill. Bringing together Ephrat Asherie Dance’s exhilarating choreography that remixes and reconnects various street and club dance styles with live music and an original composition featuring O’Farrill’s trademark Latin jazz sound, "Shadow Cities" explores how we are split between cities, memories, and generations; and how we are an amalgam of cultures, fully embodied and fragmented all at once. While identities are fixed and infinitely fluid, EAD's movements are concurrently malleable and explosive. This work asks how and why – halfway between so many disparate extremes in time, space, and state – we sometimes feel most at home and our most enlivened selves. With a cast of six dancers and four musicians, “Shadow Cities” is a reflection on the beauty, vastness, and joy of the in-between.

Asherie’s dynamic movement phrases paired with O'Farrill’s innovative compositions invite audiences into a world that celebrates the beauty and vastness of in-between spaces—whether cultural, temporal, or emotional. The collaboration highlights the power of dance and music as tools for personal and collective expression, telling stories of belonging and the transformative potential of creative unity.

With a cast of 6 dancers and 4 musicians, this work explores what it means to stay afloat in the in-between. We are split between cities, memories and generations; we are an amalgam of cultures, fully embodied and fragmented all at once; our movements are concurrently malleable and explosive, our identities fixed and infinitely fluid. Whether as immigrants, BIPOC identities or first generation Americans, this feeling of in-betweenness connects everyone in the work as we ask how and why—halfway between so many disparate extremes in time, space and state—we often feel our most enlivened selves. It is from this vivid place that Shadow Cities comes to life.
